BAHR and C4IR Ocean are joining forces to help save the ocean
The ocean is essential for life on earth and also for the world economy. But the ocean is under pressure and we need to step up to protect the ocean health. Together, C4IR Ocean and BAHR have established a formal partnership to fight legislative and regulatory barriers that are slowing down the journey towards a sustainable ocean.
The World Economic Forum has established a Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) with a network of 13 centres in 13 different countries. The network establishes projects that utilize modern technologies and digitalization to solve important societal tasks. One of these centres is C4IR Ocean located in Norway, initially founded by the Aker Group and World Economic Forum one and a half years ago, now a growing network of 16 partners. C4IR Ocean is the first centre dedicated to ocean sustainability and with a global mandate.
An arena for private-public cooperation on ocean solutions
C4IR Ocean combines the strength of Norway’s history of responsible ocean management and the industrial experience and agility of The Aker Group. Together with the World Economic Forum, the centre constitutes a public-private cooperation to develop ocean governance frameworks.

Breaking down legislative barriers to establish the largest and most inclusive hub for ocean data
C4IR Ocean's flagship project is the construction of an ocean data platform. The ocean data platform frees ocean data and makes it more accessible to researchers, decision-makers and developers.
Data from more than 220,000 marine research cruises since 1890 have already been uploaded. The ocean data platform reduces the time it takes to access this data from days and hours to seconds. This is just the beginning, and, during the coming months, more data will be uploaded from both open and closed sources, including environmental impact, biodiversity, and industrial data. The key to liberating ocean data will be the development of new forms of data governance for the ocean. The centre will create new data governance models that combine data from commercial, scientific and government sources to positively empower a variety of stakeholders while removing these unintended policy barriers and to unlock opportunities for both the public good and commercial spheres.
