Unlocking the power of ocean data
HUB Ocean is an independent non-profit foundation. We are a partner community developing a ground-breaking data platform, applications and tools to pilot new approaches to ocean governance.
Through our journey, our name has changed but our mission has always been the same:
To change the fate of the ocean by unleashing the power of data, technology and collaboration.
We created the Ocean Data Foundation and launched the Ocean Data Platform in 2019. Then, in September 2020, we joined the World Economic Forum C4IR Network (Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution) to become C4IR Ocean. And in 2022 we changed our name to HUB Ocean to reflect our role - becoming the world’s data collaboration hub. We are still an affiliate in the C4IR network.
These large scale and multifaceted challenges require all ocean stakeholders to work together to achieve our ambitions.
There are three important sources of ocean data that we work with. Open Data: publicly funded, made available by governments and scientific institutions. Private Data: owned of businesses and industry who haven’t shared with the world yet. Dispersed data: collected for a specific purpose and where there is significant potential for re-use. We bring it all together on the Ocean Data Platform so it can be used by science, governments, and industry to help create a science-led and data-driven world.
Matchmakers of data and solutions
We are convinced that facts and data will provide ocean industries, research institutions, and nations the insight needed for improved decision-making. That is why we are dedicated to the sharing of ocean data.
The Ocean Data Platform is at the core of what we do. Its global, open-source, and integrated digital data ecosystem is built to pilot and support new data-driven tools between scientists, decision-makers, industrial players and the public. The platform rapidly contextualises historical, live, and simulated big data.
We build on the centuries of experience in responsible ocean management demonstrated by Norway. We also leverage the Aker Group’s 180 years of experience and agility in ocean industries combined with the international leadership of the World Economic Forum.
HUB Ocean is growing rapidly and today we are an 18 global partner ecosystem. Together, we are making ocean information accessible and useful for all.
