Helping industries leverage and share data

an image of an electricity tower overlaid over a photograph of ocean water

Industries operating in the ocean space are increasingly under pressure to provide data that demonstrates sustainable operations. And while collecting data has become easier, it remains difficult to standardise, harmonise and share what is collected, making it more difficult to validate action on environmental impact as well as leverage data for operational purposes.

The Ocean Data Platform provides storage, harmonisation, and API access to uploaded data, making it easy to create visualisations, build tools and share non-sensitive data for the common good.

How data can facilitate careful transition

HUB Ocean CEO Kimberly Mathisen speaks about how the energy industry can change its approach to ocean data accessibility and why the industry must take a leading role in the change.

Leverage a dedicated back-end to industrial data

Through leveraging the Ocean Data Platform, companies can:

  • Easily collect and harmonise all relevant ocean data from their own operations, their supply chains’ operations and from relevant 3rd parties. This enables breakthrough insights to understand ocean impact in time and space.

  • Enrich uploaded ocean data with seamless meta tagging, advanced geospatial capabilities and the global ocean insights embedded in the platform. This provides the interoperability needed to connect local data with global ocean data for new insights and increased value.

  • Increase operational efficiency by operating your ocean data in a platform specifically built for the ocean data domain and by having ODP as a single point of distribution of your ocean data – both to public and private institutions.

  • Enjoy cost savings and scalability with specialized cloud-optimized geospatial formats and solutions like geo-indexed files and Cognite Data Fusion.

Easily share your data for the benefit of all

Today it is not easy for companies to publicly share their data. They need to build a platform to collect the data, upload it, store it and make it accessible. It can require entire teams to create and maintain a time–consuming and costly solution. The result is that it becomes too difficult to share data and is thus not prioritised.

In coming years, data sharing will become mandatory and transparency will be required. Forward-looking companies can lead their industries by proactively sharing their non-sensitive data, which in addition can improve scores in non-pricing criteria and demonstrate action on the UN Sustainable Development Goal-14, Life Below Water.

The Ocean Data Platform will allow for low-effort sharing of ocean data at scale. The infrastructure transforms the data to FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and partitions it in time and space, making it accessible by APIs.

Making Oceans Count (MOC)

The Making Ocean Count is a two year consortium-based initiative supported by VELUX FONDEN to better account for ocean risks & opportunities within the financial system.

This report, the Proof of Concept & the overarching MOC work on blue metrics is led by the Green Digital Alliance in collaboration with the Copenhagen Business School (CBS) & WWF Denmark. HUB Ocean provides a platform for developing open collaborative tools on ocean related data.

MOC works closely with key Nordic financial institutions and leading international data providers.

Part of the UN’s Ocean Data Action Coalition

HUB Ocean is leading the Ocean Decade Action Coalition (ODAC) of the High Level Panel for A Sustainable Ocean Economy together with Microsoft.

ODAC builds bridges between ongoing multilateral programs within the framework of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, countries, and key players in business and industry.
