The Ecology Data Repository will establish a new standard for ecological data management and transparency in the renewable energy sector

AUSTIN, Texas / OSLO, Norway - October 11, 2024—Cognite, the globally recognized authority in Data and AI for industry, and HUB Ocean, a pioneer in ocean data, have been selected by Dutch offshore wind farm developer Ecowende, to build and operate the Ecology Data Repository (EDR) for a groundbreaking offshore wind farm project. This collaboration aims to establish a new standard for ecological data management and data transparency in the renewable energy sector.

Ecowende is the first offshore wind farm developer to publicly share ecological data on a large scale. The data provided by Ecowende will come from numerous sensors in its offshore installations and stand-alone surveys. These sensors monitor a variety of species and oceanic parameters, both above and below the water, such as bird observations, bat presence, underwater telemetry and acoustic data.

The EDR will play a crucial role in collecting, validating, and sharing this ecological data, filling knowledge gaps and supporting research, informing decision-making, and promoting transparency around offshore wind development.

Cognite Data Fusion®, the leading Data and AI platform, will serve as the backbone of the EDR, providing a robust and scalable platform for integrating and contextualizing ecological data from various sources. HUB Ocean's deep understanding of ocean ecology data and commitment to international data standards will ensure that the EDR's data is FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and contributes to the global scientific community.

“Ecowende is on a mission to develop the first wind farm in harmony with nature, which aligns perfectly with Cognite and HUB Ocean's shared vision for a more sustainable industrial future,” said Tjalling de Bruin, CEO at Ecowende. “Together, we will create a data sharing model for research, ocean science, and environmental management around offshore wind activities.”

"HUB Ocean is committed to supporting Ecowende in achieving its ambitious goals for the Ecology Data Repository,” said Kimberly Mathisen, CEO of HUB Ocean. “We are also proud to expand our partnership with Ecowende to help develop a digital platform for modern environmental monitoring. Our combined expertise, coupled with the robust, scalable, and powerful data management and AI capabilities of Cognite Data Fusion, provides a solution that supports environmentally- conscious offshore wind operations.”

“Cognite and HUB Ocean present a unified approach to deliver the EDR, ensuring Ecowende benefits from a top-tier industrial software company and state-of-the-art domain expertise,” said Laxmi Akkaraju, Chief Customer Officer at Cognite. “HUB Ocean's utilization of Cognite technology in their Ocean Data Platform enhances integration between the two platforms, simplifying Ecowende's overall architecture, while our latest offering—Cognite Atlas AI—allows Ecowende to use Gen AI to accelerate efficiencies and drive business impact.”

The partnership news was announced at Ocean Data Action Day 2024 on Oct 10 in Oslo. The Ocean Data Action Day, hosted by HUB Ocean, Microsoft, and Accenture, is an initiative to raise awareness of the invaluable role of industrial ocean data sharing in promoting ocean health and sustainable management. Sharing this data bridges knowledge gaps, benefiting both the environment and ocean-dependent industries.

About Ecowende
A sustainable future for offshore wind that positively contributes to the North Sea’s ecology. An ambition that Ecowende – a joint venture of Shell, Eneco and Chubu – hopes to bring to life through collaboration with partners, research, and progressive innovations. The Ecowende wind farm (Hollandse Kust (west) lot VI) will be located about 53 kilometers off the Dutch coast, near IJmuiden. The wind farm will have an operational capacity of approximately 760 MW, making 3% of the current Dutch electricity demand greener. Ecowende plans to have the wind farm fully operational and commissioned end 2026. For more information about Ecowende, visit www.ecowende.nl
